Ah, that explains it all. Good to chuckle from that, thought it was a resource or something since it was walled off. Found it strange that people would build on top of it.
It's also a bit sad because I passed through many graveyards without realizing it.

To be fair, a long time ago dug soil and clay were the same colour (what you aptly describe as pink) so you're probably recollecting correctly. It has since been differentiated on the minimap for more clarity and so on and so forth.

It is also important to realize that over time the dug out soil will heal itself back to the normal terrain. Therefore, it is possible to identify how long a base has been there by approximating the regeneration of the terrain.
