I'd actually feel safer without telling it, once I get to farming/mining, paranoid seems to be the name of the game here...Roanoke

2)Clay pits. What's the difference between pink/salmon and brown clay pit and why everyone builds on top of brown one?

There are two way to get clay.

1- with digging clay pits
2- with clay trough. what you need to get clay is to dig anywhere and put clay though what you get from land.

Was interested if there was any difference in quality between pink/brown. Every pink spot is free, every brown is taken.

Are you talking about this ?

These are only dirt trails : http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Terrain/Trails

The other types of weird terrain are clay pits (I'm not sure it really looks like this anymore, I'll update the image as soon as I'll cross a clay pit) :

And lime pits :

You look like you wanna settle near nice places, I'd advice you to chose lime pits instead of clay ones. Clay can indeed be dug, but also created... with lime. Lime, however, can't be created. So... :D

brown
I could dig clay from both (pink recently and brown quite a while ago, so kinda foggy memory), but for some reason no one settles on pink, while almost all brown spots are fenced.

I shouldn't be laughing but I can't help sorry

Actually, those brown pits are not pits at all, they are flattened places, that's all; when you dig on a "normal" ground, the biome disappears under your feet and so you see the dirt without grass on it.
