iron bars purity

i make iron bars using iron ore 17% purity, 20 ore 3 lime. sometimes 25 ore because lime is scarce around my homestead. at first it yield iron bars with 17% purity but the purity kept getting worse, it down to 9% now. is this how things work? will the purity keep going down?( if not, how can I fix it so it goes back to the 17% purity?)

The lime you are using is low or different purity thus changing its alchemical value. If you want the purity of the ore then use only the ore. After a few rotations you will "purge' the smelter of your lime impurities and it will go back to 17% bars.
