Salem "Let's Play" - Submit Your Suggestions/Requests

Postby Ikpeip » Thu Aug 15, 2013 6:14 am

Good evening Pilgrims,

To help lessen Salem's steep learning curve, MM Tribe will be producing a "Let's Play" type tutorial for Salem. The intent is to give walk-throughs for the basics that new Pilgrims tend to stumble over.

We'd like to solicits suggestions and/or requests for topics to be covered in the video. Again, these should be new-player level topics. Not things you might be having trouble with later in the game, but things you've seen new players struggle with, or struggled with yourself when just started. For example, fighting crickets.

There's no guarantee every suggestion will make it into the first video, but all reasonable suggestions will be considered.

What would you like to see?

Faithfully,

How to effectively level proficiencies. New players seem to have a hard time figuring out that its more than studying what every you pick up or studying the same thing over and over.
Basic base defense, including things like splash damage.
There should also be at least a mention of the importance of the forums.

So fighting the Plymouth end boss will not be included?

I can only imagine what you mean by that.

You guys looking to do a complete set of your own or just build on the already existing videos?

So far it looks like we have Studying Inspirationals & Basic Raiding Mechanics.

@MagicMan: I see this as being a unique video series independent of your average run-of-the-mill tutorials.

I'm sure we can work in a cameo for the Boss.

Not building off already existing videos. A lot of existing advice out there is well-intentioned but... inaccurate.

How to Gluttony,

Using food before farming (foraged stuff, simple cooked stuff) and bit more "advanced" foods (windy poohs, cabbage rolls, meat pies... etc)

The first video should emphasize the part of walking around and finding a good spot to start while picking up the correct inspirationals. I imagine something like a short (< 5 min) introduction into the biomes and the typical inspirationals/foods one finds there - enriched with some (2-4) examples of a good spot to start and a bad spot to start. One should end up having a good spot for the leanto, some basic items/structures (fire place, woven baskets/wooden chests, whittling bench, perhaps drying rack), cover the most common topics like: "How to make fire"(TM), "How to make fibers", "How to fish", "Why does my stuff disappear?"(TM)

A second video should focus only on gluttony and the biles. Like: What are they for, how to raise them (to approx 10), what kind of food to use (perhaps a small recap on the biomes here), Why one has to raise them equally, etc.

Third video should focus on "how to set up a claim", like finding a good spot (plane vs. digging, good water spots, ore mine, lime quarry), filling up claimstone, how to generate money (crickets, snake skins, rabbits), basic defence, important structures (Kiln, Pilgrims Hovel/Farmers House, Sawbuck, Mine, Ore Smelter, Containers) (maybe split in several videos)

Fourth video should focus on resources (fields, trees, planting pots, baking, hunting) or probably these can be splitted into several focus-videos.

Will we find these videos from youtube? Will they be narrated?

Or just flat out-dated. You guys seem to be a permanent group here as long as Salem keeps going. I just ask that you guys try to keep videos updated if mechanics change.

I do like the "How to raid" and "how to glutton" ones, but the devs are looking into doing some updates to the gluttony and food system. Hard to say how that's going to turn out, and it could end up being done in a month or three months.

Oh, and have to make a HOW MAEK FIRE video. :D Should be done in the spirit of slapstick comedy.

I got a great suggestion, but i'm almost certain you cannot do it !!

Show people how to be a competitive player from day 1, no external legacy items, no stall, nothing, just start with a fresh toon & show the world how to get strong as a new player!!! (impossible or it takes 10h/day 7/7 for half a year)
Teach them how to grow/make purity humus, again, without legacy items !!!
Teach them how to grow/make purity tree's, again, without legacy items !!!
