That's just to be on the safe side. IIRC maps take 20-40 minutes to unload (depends on some internal server stuff), but don't quote me on that.

It also depends on if there is someone else nearby. The tile has to be unoccupied by players (time seems to vary, but roughly 20-30m). If you log out on the KO'd character and then log on an alt nearby, it won't help.

If someone wanders by after you've logged out, that will also reset the timer for the tile to unload.

Your best bet is to kin your KO'd character on an alt (which is not nearby), and then log on the alt. When it says your KO'd character has logged off, then the tile had deloaded, and you can switch back.

I second Paul's method. Also great if you have items dropped by your toon. Knowing when you toon is released gives you a shot to make a run for the items he dropped if you were KO'd close to your homestead. They do not disappear in my experience because the map reloads before your body drops everything and ports home.
