do you have java installed? have you tried reinstalling it or the game?

I have java installed and all the game is, is a jar file and when i try to open it, it gives me the previous message.

you should not open the game via a .jar file. There are .bat files floating around, but your best bet is the downloaded jnlp file (either vanilla client or ender's). I recall someone encountering a similar error because of a bad java installation. Try reinstalling java?
