From what I experienced, after trying to use the guide, I ended up having to cycle through 5 random places (presumably places with the same homestead secret), and after 5 tries, I was **** out of luck, I get no other chance.

So, is the ONLY WAY I can get another chance at joining my friend, to create a brand new character and abandon the 10 or so hours playtime I had on my other character all because of this awful system?

You pressed the wrong button. Just make a new character and try again.
Or walk, walking is fun! Just pick up everything useful (check stumps!) and level your character on the way. That way you have the necessary skills to settle when you arrive at your friend. Btw. there is some kind of map players made from their travels: http://salemres.5gbfree.com/
It's far from complete.
Edit: Oh and get "Hiking", so you can build lean-tos to port to Boston if your inventory is full. There you can put it on alts or sell it.

I don't think it takes 10 hours to walk from Boston to the edge of the map (might take 15-20 if you have to go around large terrain features). Most people are within a couple hours walk of the starting city from a wilderness spawn.

You haven't traveled much...
The map is huge, you can walk for more than a day before you get to the darkness and then it just begins. I have seen a lot of settlements near the darkness and beyond.

I had to walk from Boston to my place once. It took me less than 2 hours. I also walked from this base to darkness - took about an hour. It took more time to walk to the edge of the map, but that's because I wasn't walking in straight line. In the end I think Ii would require 4-6 hours to walk from Boston to the western edge of the map.

The problem with the just walk there idea is that if your trying to walk to the other side of the mountain range as a new player you're screwed.

Admittedly, you're right, at least not on the current server. I think I had hit the darkness in about six-seven hours (rough estimate, wasn't timing or heading directly there purposefully), but was using forage most of the time to pick up goodies. I was generally heading west and climbing where I could. Given the rest of the map at the time, 10 hours should have been doable. The map was the same size as they are now. (Note: heading to a corner will, of course, take longer by sqrt (2) ).
