What is the point of clothing?

I'm at a point now where I can begin making basic clothing and was wondering, why should I?
Does it provide bonuses?

I noticed that each item of clothing is linked to a proficiency but what does that mean exactly?

The better the clothing the more slots you can "socket" into it and in many cases the easier it is to do. The prof. next to the clothing shows what artifice would be best to slot in it. You want to "match" your clothing and your artifice whenever possible and you will have less chance to break your clothing when doing it.

clothing crafted with higher tier items give you less problems and more slots where to put your artifacts, many artifacts are for fighting but there are some very good for crafting and working like tree-chopping and soil-digging
also in the last patch devs introduced inventory slots wich give you more space in you inventory.

i meant "crafting" as civilian acts, not like fighting that are for war acts. that's all ^^

PS: i was refering to tree-chopping, soil digging and pockets
