Who has an understanding of splash dmg mechanics?

Postby Darkside » Tue Jun 04, 2013 2:08 pm

So in an effort to make my base more secure I want to add a perimeter wall around my core area which is already walled in. It will be stone like my core area wall so I want to space it out so that it does not cause splash dmg to my core wall if someone bashes my perimeter wall.

From all the posts on here the consensus seems to be that splash damage occurs whenever a wall section is destroyed and it affects any equal or lesser value wall section within 5 tiles of the 4 cardinal directions of the destroyed wall.

Now, on my claim I already had some kind of wall beyond my core area in some areas which is 2 tiles away so I wanted to destroy them and I thought this would be neat way to see splash damage in action. I destroyed several sections and was surprised to find that only one of the destroyed walls caused splash damage to my core wall, as shown below:

The pic shows me after I have already destroyed several sections of that wall I am facing, which used to continue down parallel to the wall on the right beyond the pictures boundary to the south. But if you notice on my core wall to the right, only 1 section has any damage to it from destroying all the wall sections to the wall on the left.

After taking this pic I continued destroying that wall and still dont see anymore splash to my wall on the right.

Why?

the splash damage is very finicky at the moment: there is splashing in cases where there shouldn't be any, and vice versa. Are you sure they're not splashing anything at all? It might just be less than 25%, so that there is no visual indicator.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

I thought of that, I went to each of the wall sections on the right and clicked repair on them. The only one which popped up with the message that I need flint to repair this was the one visibly damaged section

I remember someone saying that splash depends on direction which you are facing when destroying the wall. In general splash was supposed to go up to 5 tiles in direction which you are facing and stopping at first splashable object. In case of your screen it would explain why there was no splash while you were facing in direction parallel to the wall.
Which side were you facing when destroying that section which caused splash?

I was always facing the direction you see me in the screen shot - perpendicular to my own wall

this happend to me yesterday too,i destroyed a wall segment and it didn't cause any splash damage to the corner post
first it was two corner post and were joined together by two wall tiles when i destroyed one of the wall tiles splash damage worked normally.when they no longer was combined by those two wall tiles the other part of the wall did not cause any splash damage even tho it was in 1 tile gap from the corner post.

X= corner post
- = wall tile

--X--X
--X -X splash damage normally to both first X and last -
--X X splash damage to only the last X

so something is wrong here
