Maximum number of characters?

I've been using the search function to find the answer, but could not find any. So, what is the maximum number of characters we are allowed to have?

I am unaware of any cap on the character amount. There are accounts where I have hit 100+. There does not seem to be any cap.

100+ active characters? The dead ones stay?

No, dead ones are removed. Or rather - are invisible. You can't reuse a name of dead character
