i'm still quite a noob myself, but i hope i can help a little.
1. the noob guide gives a pretty good answer to this one i think. basically somewhere that gives good access to resources. forest and grassland within walking range is very desirable. i think the more biomes you can access easily the better. a decent sized lime deposit is also really nice to have, otherwise you may need to make an alt somewhere else just to get lime. its also nice if the area isn't busy, so less people will notice your base and perhaps raid it. not settling next to a river is also wise since they are roads for people with boats.
2. putting up a claim is important as soon as you can, otherwise things you build will decay and anyone can wander in and take all your stuff.
3. hunting crickets for cricket teams and collecting savage charms is great. i also highly recommend making hay and selling it to other players you can find on the forums. there are several plays on roanoke paying 6s per hay. that's over 1s for every piece of grass! awesome.
4. i'm usually wandering, since you go faster and find more stuff. when im just working around my base i just walk. foraging is great if you're trying to find a scarcer forageable. i use it when i go out to collect things like devil's wort.
5. i think both humours and skills are important to work on. i would definitely try to start farming as soon as possible.
6. towns are special claims where players live together i guess. though lone players also put up town claims.
7. as far as i understand, having a town claim is very helpful because then a raider has to put up a waste claim in order to raid you. also having lots of braziers, and having your base consist of multiple walled off sections.
