Advertise the fact you are in open beta!

Postby zibers » Fri May 10, 2013 6:47 pm

Hello dear developers,
First of i want to tell you that i love your game.its great and the constant updates, even if they are small sometimes, give a good feeling for the game future.
BUT the biggest problem with the game is that it lacks players. there are not enough people to trade with and if YOU wont get more players YOU wont have money for food and YOU will need to close the game that i enjoy so much.
Whats the solution you ask? Advertise! go out and talk to game journalists about your game features. this game has interesting ideas! I remember you had a show off in E3 once and that is how I first heard about your game. that was great. since then i have never heard ANY thing UNTIL a few weeks ago i read on the escapist something about what your designer saying about your perma-death system, that article DID NOT mention you are in open beta it only said, and I'm quoting:
"The game is due out some time in Q1 this year, and will be free-to-play."
NOTHING about you are in open beta. NOTHING about a release date. then to find out about the fact you are in beta i had to search "salem" in google, BTW your game was about number 5-7 in the search result, only then i saw a very small pale button on the top left corner that said " register to open beta".
THIS IS RIDICULOUS. you need to show people that you are in open beta! The moment I saw your game I knew I wanted to play it but I didn't know that I could! you are losing a lot of people JUST because they don't know your interesting fun game exist!
Get some advertisement with Youtubers and gaming sites! its basically free. go for the hard core minecraft players like the yogcast and some great other people. go and mock minecraft shallow crafting compered to yours. talk about your rich farming and your future plans.

if you do this right you may make this game like a second eve. Extremely hard core with a big active as hell community .

Fixed? Whats wrong with it? I am fully capable to play and enjoy it. its not a full released game, its a beta, no one getting in expects a full game.
The problem is the nobody knows the game exist! and that is really bad for the game.

Whether the game is playable or not depends. There are many whiners out there who, well, whine in every update and there are those who play the game and enjoy it. Read some of the update notes in Announcement section and you'll see. But for Salem being in OB, I'd say it's still too early to publish. There are much to be implemented.

lol, Paradox tried this once and it didn't work. After they did an advertising campaign in the US last year with all of the major MMO websites, they proceeded to give out 10s of 1000s of beta keys to the aforementioned websites. Life was good, we had tons of people playing...until everybody figured that the game was **** because of the ****** default client, and the fact that the game was exetremely unbalanced in favor of veteran players who were already well developed.

I think Paradox learned a valuable lesson about promoting a game too much before it is ready to be played by the public. When they think it is ready to give a GOOD impression upon a new playerbase, I am sure they will get back to the advertising side of things.

What? What is missing?
A better question is what is missing that will be noticed as missing to every new guy that gets in the game. if you are talking about stuff that you are not able to get until you invested a week or a month it is irrelevant. I did not notice the lack of promised crops, I did not notice the lack of livestock until a month in to the game and i got invested and started to trade.
I did not notice the lack of features from HnH because before coming to the fourm I did not know that game exist as well.

this game is playable and even if you think stuff are missing getting more players to play it will do everything BUT harm the game

Did I say something is missing in this game? No, I didn't, so please read my comment very carefully before making your assumption. I said there are still things to be added which is entirely different from the game lacks something. As stax mentioned above, the game needs a better default client and a more friendly community where newbies would feel at home as vets. Basically, the game is playable but there are other things yet to be added are more livestocks, well's purity, the rest of this recent update and some other smaller details.

I'm sorry if I miss read. i sort of merged your comment and the first guy comment.
I do agree this game is not user friendly and that the client is objectively bad and that enders client is objectivity better.
still this game is for the hard core wiki readers and guide users. I know it sould not be that way for a larger community.
still some advertisement would help the player base.
