Is it because of my edit complaining about the silver cost? I did manage to find the charms I needed last night. I got lucky and found two feathers at one point very close to each other. I just happened to have arrow heads stored so I could craft them and not risk death before selling them. But in the past, it was sometimes days before I would spot a feather (perhaps due to using wandering rather than forging?).

In any case, I'm very serious about my above question: "How do you tell a boiled Witch's Hat from a non-boiled Witch's Hat? There seems to be no visual OR textual difference between the two."

After selling my charms, I immediately brought the pot and spent the time waiting for a fire to heat up and then spent another 30 minutes to boil 4 Witch Hats. I then compared it to another Witch Hat I had just picked up and could tell no difference. Did I not look closely enough?

Again, not purposely trolling; however, I am disappointed in this update.
Edit: An update that I would like to point out that prior to this thread, I had no idea what pot they were referring to or what steps I needed to follow to be able to do any of the above mentioned steps to be able to eat shrooms again. The cauldron is too far out of my reach right now and for noobs who might start today, REALLY far out of reach. As for eating roasted chestnuts, they are no where on par with restoration of health compared to either shroom prior to the poison update.

From the update announcement:
"Things crafted from unboiled mushrooms will be as poisonous as the mushrooms themselves are natively. The property of being poisonous is thus inherited through crafting steps."

The largest issue besides the cost to noobs (although I've been reading some posts from the developers and it looks like the increased difficulty and annoyance through this update was fully intentional) is that there doesn't seem to be any information or icon difference between a boiled mushroom and an un-boiled mushroom. The fact that no one has corrected me yet on this seems to suggest I'm correct.

Some mushrooms arent poisonous and dont need to be boiled. I just avoid the waxing mushrooms now and pick lavender blewits and sugar caps. They work just as well without any poisoning.

Everyone complains and whines so much about the shrooms poisoning. Have any of you actually gone out and tried to live off them? I eat all the waxing toadstools I can find while exploring the darkness. They have almost no noticeable effect. Eat them with impunity.

Now yes, witches hats do have a significant effect... so don't eat them! It is realistic that at least one mushrooms can make you sick. The introduction of this mechanic will clearly lead to creating poisons an buffs for day to day use, so i am happy with its application .

Quite honestly, I was gorging on both kinds of toadstools and saw no real hindrance with a sub 20 humor character. I really don't see where the problem is. (This was with both waxing and waning toadstools.) I'm not sure either one will be useful for gluttony, though (haven't tried to see if the poison will kick you out of gluttony mode).

Witch's Hats, one of the best early Black Bile foraged foods, though, does slow things down a good bit with it's large poison debuff and duration.
