Are these incredibly rare? I have been playing for three weeks and haven't been able to identify one yet...

They are extremely common in the the badlands (dessert) biome.

They're really common in coniferous forests, too.

No idea why I haven't seen one yet, but that pic is EXACTLY what I needed to help me along. Thank you both, especially Khaztropix.

I can't find these anywhere! Are they extremely tiny or something? Do I need a skill to see them? I came searching for help a few days ago and found this post, since then I have been over and over badlands and pine forests with a fine toothcomb! Maybe mine are invisible or something :P Can anyone please offer any more info?

I do see a LOT of those piles of wood thingies you see on the coast but they don't look anything like the pic I saw posted, they just look like piles of wood and you get a single option 'Chop Wood'

Are you sure they're the badlands? In the badlands they're literally every 20 feet, you have to actively avoid them in order to not bump into them. Fairly common in coniferous forests as well, though not quite as ridiculously so. Badlands are below:

Here's coniferous:

Note there are less thorn bushes and harder to see, but there are still some... I'm standing in-between two of them in the picture.

Easiest way to find them is to make an alt and spam through the options the wilderness guide gives you until you find one of those... And then make another if that doesn't work. Tricky thing about thorn bushes is they sap blood when you pick em :'( so make sure to give your noobie alt some food if not boost his blood a bit.

Woodlands also spawn them, although to a lesser degree than badlands (seems to be similar to the coniferous spawning rate).
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Oh yeah good call, the woodlands are super boring though, I wanted to hang myself after being stuck in them for too long and little to no food aside from witch's hats which are not much fun.

O am beginning to think I'm bugged, I have not seen anything like that anywhere, I have been to plenty of pine forests and yes the place I am now is badlands judging from your pic and it's not my first visit to a badlands biome but not a single thorn bush anywhere, I have been wandering the world for a lot of hours per day for 3 weeks now and not seen any of these!
