Only problem I had when I started out was that it did not say what part of the rod was broken, so you'd have to like guess at what you'd need to replace in order to fish again lol, or disassemble the rod

I actually hate Salem's fishing mechanic in a very big way because of that. At least with afk fishing you can do others things or sit back and enjoy the game environment around you.
Peacefully sitting in your canoe fishing on a river instead of waiting for the next icon to pop up and guess at.

I wouldn't have a problem with the buttons if the results were more understandable. Supposedly, for every 3 choices, one is neutral, one is + and one is -. But when I click on a choice, the avatar often doesn't do anything to indicate a + or - reaction. I'm forced to assume that it sometimes indicates the reaction and sometimes doesn't...randomly? It makes for a very frustrating and nearly impossible minigame since not only can you not tell when you're doing it right, you have no idea which fish is on the line so it's basically always a guess.

But it does show you..?
You lean forwards for a bad result, and back for a good one. You stay the same for neutral. If you go too far forward, you lose it. If you go all the way back, it's caught.

Idk about you, but I've actually fished and speaking on it without fishing will only be terrible and everyone could die so you should probably go fish and come back and edit your post since you likely haven't done it in a very long time. But since I fish, idk why I'm even explaining this to you since others will then be able to fish too.

10 points to whoever finds the post I'm referencing here ^

The bad thing about the pop-up messages is that they're so intrusive, so you can't really chat while you fish.

I have tried fishing some more lately, and its not so bad if you get used to it. I guess you need to find out what kind of fish you use to get in a spot and then check the long list of alternative that might pop up. Even though I would prefer if fishing was a relaxing more or less passive activity.

It is because some choices are not strong enough to get you to a higher/lower level all the time. There are weak negative and weak positive actions. Do serveral weak negatives and you'll see a lower level being reached :D.
