Ok, lets conclude. We are all human beings. We should not categorize people based on their gender. Therefore when talking about people in third person where you do not know their gender, you shall refer to them as she/he or he/she. The problem by doing this is obvious as some would take that as an insult aswell, and some would be affronted that the wrong gender is mentioned first or last. We could use more words for example saying "the person that said this and that." So I suggest a single word to be used talking about a person in third person with uncertain gender: Hum.

Out of interest: if you point out that you are male in a forum dominated by females, would one receive any downgrading treatment?

Women have their own "treatment" for men when they have number superiority. As someone who has lived with groups of women as the only man, and worked in places where there were only about 5% blokes (if even), that has been my experience. Just take a look at any married guy with all daughters. I bet in most cases he looks pretty browbeaten lol. I imagine the same thing would occur on forums as well, but I'm unsure. It's interesting to consider how their behavior would change as a result of anonymity.
