Black screen and missing textures

I am a new player and having issues running the game.

Installing Salem without problems but when I start a new character all of the models for NPC and placed items are missing. I can see chat bubbles like "Talk to the man in the brown hat." and all of the ground textures load but nothing else.

Second problem is when if I close the client and relaunch the game I see nothing other than a black screen. This is at the login screen. If i click where the "Login" button should be I also get no response.

I am running Java 7-32 and have had the same problem with either the default client or Enders.

Am I missing something obvious?

Maybe a mod could move this to Bugs and Technicalities? I have no idea whats going on but Magic (the mod on said forum) is a whizz
