Well that is a risk, but if you have no reason to excpect anyone after you for any specific reason, someone would have to be very persistant to wait up to 48 hours straight. (I always wait about that ammount of time in the rare occation anyone comes by.)

I remember an instance of the chief and his braves doing just that for a member of the rebellion.

Yeah, but that individual probably knew he was in trouble. If someone approaches me in the middle of nowhere I dont suspect them to be after me in particular. Im more worried I will be killed "en passant".

Its possible that they thought you were a bear, the red diamond is easily confused for the red square, I know I have done it a few times.
