not really, every game i have ever played has the quitters that leave once they fall behind then spend the next several months demanding a fresh start, eventually one happens, they all play for 2 - 4 weeks until falling behind and quitting again. leaving a completely dead server in their wake.
rinse repeat, eventually after their 3rd or 4th restart they go into "lol you still play THAT game? i quit after getting **** on so obviously im better than you" mode the morons at warcrap never learned this and that is why they have 50,000 servers with no players in spite of many million retards that play their game.
Meh I was doing awesome when I quit. I had just taken over a big plot of land, repaired it, terraformed a bunch of it. My humours were getting up there, I had tiered farms, powerful friends.
I quit for three reasons: Low pop, unfinished state, and a promise from the devs that there was no wipe planned at release (how do you "release" a game with no wipe from the beta?).
Unfortunately the former two problems won't ever likely get solved. The game just doesn't have the budget to develop quickly enough (one or two programmers hacking away to put out minor weekly patches just won't cut it). At this rate, the game will never actually be released - mind you, even if it is, the aforementioned lack of a wipe will make the release meaningless.
Anyway, that's my two cents. It's a shame, because Salem is literally my favourite MMO presently. If only it had a bigger budget and smarter dev's imagine what it could have been. Hopefully they change their minds and agree to either wipe the servers at release (if it ever comes) or, at least, start a new server (mind you, this would make pop issues even worse).
