Let me play devils advocate here and take somewhat of a middle ground.

I cant see how people are drawing a connection between a very linear game (in terms of overall choices/playstyle) such as CoD or any modern FPS and a game such as Salem where there game is much more dynamic and open to the types of choices players make. In CoD you kill people, everybody kills people, its how the game plays, you can use different weapons, tactics and what not, but in the end the core mechanics are very straight forward and are not driven by a variety player choices.

In a game like Salem, not everybody has to play the same way, you can decide to play a Murderer/Raider, A Hermit/Farmer or a Ranger/Tracker or even some weird mix of all of them. It is completely up to the player, the player makes a choice and those choices directly influence their game experience as well as that of fellow players they encounter along the way. It is a very dynamic open ended system, one time you meet a player who is friendly and wants to help you out, the next it could be someone who wants to kill you.

I would never jump to the conclusion that someone who opts down the darker path in-game(raiding/killing) is likely to be a murder/psychopath in real life. But it would definitely be interesting to see some sort of formal study on just what sort of connections there are. I am speaking generally here but I find it hard to believe that there is absolutely no connection between the type of person you are in real life and the decisions you make in game (or even on these forums), more so when the actions are very clear and constantly the same for an extended period of time.

Ever heard of Day-Z?

Anyhow, apart from "minor" details like having a common sense and a working brain I can talk from personal experience here. I consistently play bad/evil characters and personas whenever I get the chance and yet I am a massive carebear IRL. I would never be a priest in a million years IRL but in here I portray the character Father George, one of the most pious men in Salem. I know other persons like me that tend to play the opposite to how they really, I know others that tend to play much like how they are and yet more that have no pattern what so ever. It's almost like their IRL personality has absolutely nothing to do with what they play in games...

Some people love drama
Some people love griefing other people
Some people love destroying other peoples stuff
Some people love stealing
Some people love competition
Some people love teamwork
Some people love unity
Some people love creating things

...

Im sure that reflects on peoples playstyle.

I think its just personallity.

Last time i played dayz......

Met up with 2 really nice guys at the SE military camp.
Killed a bandit with pistols and a axe while he unloaded on us with a ak.
Me and another guy got stabilized but low on blood passing out every couple mins.
Run to cherno for blood holding up in house while the one healthy guy did the run.
Meanwhile my buddy has been running to meet up with me and has gear for me.
Healthy guy gets back to heal while my buddy watches from the bushes.
Buddy throws smoke and shoots the windows to get them looking at the door and down on the ground.
I put a bullet in the back of both my new friends heads

Obviously even choosing to play this game indicates you are a sociopath irl because what sane and compassionate person would choose to play a game where you go around killing little animals, butchering them and then walking around wearing their skin?

Edit - change font color to be blue to represent sarcasm. The point I was trying to make was to take the moral argument about killing and raiding reflects on you morally in real life and take it to its logical/illogical conclusion. The conclusion is of course almost as ridiculous as half the other posts in this thread.

Ugh. *unfortunately edits post to add sarcasm tags for those who might have trouble understanding my point otherwise*

But Dallane asking if I was retarded was probably unrelated to the post anyways...
