Shift click drops a single digs worth of dirt onto the nearest corner where you clicked.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.

When holding shift while dropping dir it will raise which ever corner you clicked to drop the dirt on by 1 height unit.

Thank you Sevenless and Straxjax :)
That's one bit more knowledge of Salem.

Don't know about anyone else, but I tend not to use shift-click much when dropping dirt. (Maybe if I'm trying to leave an intentional trail, but those days are over since the world is getting more crowded.)

Magicman, you dont need shift click for flattening land, but it is needed when you are trying to raise the land to form an embankment or an elevated building area.

Good point, but I usually want to raise land much higher than 1 unit if I'm going to do this. I guess if I really want to measure how high I'm going it'd be important to do it this way.
