Its same thing to go to a zoo and see the monkeys laughing and trowing poop at you, you dont mind because they are irrationale enough to make you feel pity for them.
And i dont see why a (social)game and the real life are completely different, since the people playing it are surprisingly enough real people, the "rules of game" are trying to be the closest to reality as possible, and the social traits estabilished are essencialy the same you can see on RL. So if Salem proposes the creation of a controled micro-cosmos, yes we can discuss about the moral implication of the acts perpretated in-game, since in my opinion our characters are extensions of ourselves and in the end you are trying to achieve or acr ingame (or on the forums) in the same way you wanted in real life if the conditions are right.
How do you explain that in other servers, certain people went the raider path, but in yet another servers the very same people went the ranger path? If their ingame personas were truly extension of themselves, shouldn't that be impossible unless they have a dissociative identity disorder? Or does it perhaps mean that they actually treat the game like a game, much like an actor treats a role he plays as a part of a play/movie rather than an extension of themselves?
Very simple my dear james, people are not entirely ***** or saints. You can do rangeiring or mindless looting at the same character on the same server, maybe you are trying to compensate something, maybe you are just looking for some profit ( since i hardly call bounty hunting a serious "good" thing). Asking such a question makes you unaware of the situations who occour in the real life... Why a gangster would kill his rivals but protect their families? Why the drug dealers in slums across the world take peoples lifes trough addiction but help the population of their neighborhood? Even more, why a country can wage a war in another, killing millions of innocents, forcing a western ideology to a diferent culture, and even so talk about freedom and democracy?
It's a simple matter of facts, a good deed cant make us turn a blind eye for the bad ones. There isnt any dissociative disorder on this, just human behaviour. But if you are willing to do any harm for other human being, just for the spite of it, you cant call yourself righteous, good, or fair.
A clarification: the situation I am refering do not do those things simultaneously. Imagine people killing anything they see moving in one server, while in another server they never hurt any innocent and they take ranger missions not for their personal wealth but for the justice of the server. It very much sounds like roleplaying rather than an extension of their real life selves.
Edit: It is almost as if they chose to play the role of a villain in one server and chose to play a "hero" role in another server.
Edit2: The extreme difference shown by the same person in that scenario is not equivalent to the regular duality that can be found among common people. The only rational explanation is that the game is being treated like game first and foremost.
