Population explosion +300%

Postby CockyBastard » Tue Apr 02, 2013 7:13 pm

If this game suddenly became popular (300% population increase) could the servers handle it, would the code handle it, would they be able to get in staff to manage the issues with greater load/stress on the game????

I was paddling on a lake, in a canoe, while carrying a boat. Then lost all my chit to lag!

lol. Wasn't too long ago Jamestown was at 20% utilization with 110 users and it crashed the server.

Damn, I regularly see the servers with about 150 odd players lately, utilisation is barely above 10% though, guess it is what the players are up to perhaps - running amock might spaz the server, sitting at home watering flowers the server can cope with :)

Perhaps. Game still rubber bands, lags out, and dc's with 150 players. A 300% increase of that would be 450 players. There isn't 450 players spread out over the 3 servers at any given time. And the game is world wide!! Which is why Darkside's comment is epic.

There's no question that there are still some server crashes, but it's a lot better than many MMO's I could cite, even those in production mode :D The rubber-banding I notice seems to be due to problems with individual's connections, not with server resources. Especially with North American players, there's a lot of interwebs between you and the game servers. Here's a traceroute from my ISP to the Jamestown server, starting at the Tier 1 providers:

Code: Select all
  8    84 ms    42 ms    42 ms  xe-11-2-0.edge4.Dallas3.Level3.net [4.59.32.1]

 15   184 ms   182 ms   183 ms  ae-44-44.ebr2.Paris1.Level3.net [4.69.137.61]
 16   184 ms   197 ms   182 ms  ae-46-46.ebr1.Frankfurt1.Level3.net [4.69.143.137]
 17   182 ms   184 ms   182 ms  ae-81-81.csw3.Frankfurt1.Level3.net [4.69.140.10]
 18   183 ms   184 ms   182 ms  ae-83-83.ebr3.Frankfurt1.Level3.net [4.69.163.9]
 19   182 ms   189 ms   180 ms  ae-45-45.ebr1.Dusseldorf1.Level3.net [4.69.143.165]
 20   182 ms   181 ms   181 ms  ae-3-8.bar1.Stockholm1.Level3.net [4.69.200.249]
 21   182 ms   181 ms   180 ms  213.242.110.138
 22   182 ms   181 ms   181 ms  gh-fw2-sto.game-hosting.com [37.18.208.52]
 23   181 ms   182 ms   182 ms  jamestown.seatribe.se [37.18.208.100]

That's 15 hops after it leaves my ISP's infrastructure, going through three US states and four European countries. And you'll notice that the majority of my ping time comes from the Dallas interconnect. It just so happens that any traffic through my ISP bound for Eastern or Northern Europe goes through these routers, and they are always a problem. For me trying to play Minecraft on a German server is basically not possible. The fact that I get any sort of decent response out of Salem indicates some very good network compensation code.

Neither of those things has any bearing on whether the server crashes
