Milk of lime, making lime hides when comes from barrel bug

Postby Chillingbear » Sat Mar 30, 2013 9:52 pm

When I was trying to make lime hides from using milk of lime that was stored in a barrel it made my first lime hide and then my second, which were dried snake skins from stumps, and then I was moving on to dried rabbit skin which then made it stop highlighting the buckets when 1 was 10/10 full and the other was just slightly depleted. I kept throwing the milk of lime back and trying to get it again to no avail. However when I made my milk of lime by using water and one of my lime and it never touched the barrel it worked perfectly fine.

it isn't visible, but milk of lime actually has a concentration (just like tanning fluid). I think someone posted 3-4 pieces of lime per full barrel (but I do not know for sure). I also read about some rounding errors resulting in your mentioned behaviour.
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Whenever a fluid is "used", its concentration decreases. This happens when tanning hides, liming hides, and withdrawing fluid from a tub/barrel with a bucket.

To be safe, follow these precautions:
-Add hides to a tub BEFORE tanning fluid.
-Do not withdraw tanning fluid from a filled tub.
-Use at least half-strength Milk of Lime for liming hides, otherwise the concentration will drop too low before you finish.

My trick that I use when liming hides is to use 2 buckets of water: One for Milk of Lime, the other to refill it after each hide. This limes 4 hides and then has left-over fluid that's strong enough for use in a Clay Trough.
