This is a long standing issue. How long has it been since you cleared Java off your system? I'd suggest uninstalling Java, find a utility that will clean any traces off your computer (including in the registry) and run it, and then reinstall. This may help speed things up some. I can't promise anything, though.
Why kind of processor do you have? This is an issue with too many threads and too much work for the processor. Java just doesn't do multiprocessing so having multiple cores doesn't help. You can help Salem load faster by minimizing the window and logging out every minute or two. Just log out, don't exit the game. Wait about 30 seconds and log back in. It's the way Salem handles resource loading. Resources are served like a web page instead of installed on the client, so the first time loading them during a session slows things down. When logging in for the first time or after a client update, this can take quite a while. Map loading is probably the biggest drag on things, though, and can really bog down my old system.
Check your network connection. If you know how to monitor the traffic, this would be good. A bad, unstable, or slow connection can cause this. Make sure your router is letting all traffic through. Ports TCP 1871 and UDP 1870 need to be available for Salem. (May do nothing, may help. I can only suggest.) Check any firewalls or other security software your running. They may be holding down the process, too.
I'm with Kandarim and you should make sure you video driver is up to date, but that has little to do with this issue from what I've seen.
