You can homestead a claim the same way that you can homestead a leanto. If you have your claimed homesteaded, you would be able to port to Boston from anywhere on the claim.

I would still recommend putting your claim on a leanto in a safe spot on your claim though.

Homestead, as I understand it, is the only point from which you can teleport back and forth to boston from. You'r other claim, which isnt your homestead, still is your plot as well, with all permissions in place, and which can be kept active by yourself.

Me, I'd take the chance and move-in on someone's abandoned plot, buy a bell and call it a day.

Stax...Im interested in knowing why, about this statement. . .Im learning as well. Im also assuming that every spot on your claim is safe, or unsafe, depending on how you think about it.

If you don't commit crimes it doesnt really matter. Leanto's used to have a radius around them that you could summon offline criminals into the game. Awhile back they changed it so you need to have line of sight to the summon object [leanto] to be able to summon, so if it is behind a bunch of walls it shouldn't matter that much anymore. Rather be safe than sorry though, and still make a habit of placing your leanto atleast 10 tiles away inside of your walls.

Yes, it leaves a scent like any waste crime, though. That and the fact that they can decay when not on a claim is why you should always log off somewhere near your leanto, rather than in boston, until you have a pclaim.

When I moved camps (from somewhat developed to completely new area) I made sure to scout the area first to make sure there wasn't any neighbours too close. Then I claimed my land, "alted" as much as I could before walking the distance. I did go back to my old camp for my compost bins and a carpenter's bench - and possibly a tanning tub. I left everything else.

As for taking over abandoned areas - why not. But as others have already said. ask yourself why they left. In my case I felt like I lived in the middle of an autobahn. Way too many passers-by for my taste (0 would've been great - had 7 in less than 2 weeks).
