You're supposed to sell hides like beaver and bear, and tan the rest into leather. That's the most efficient way to make silver.

Less than whatever else you're killing for brains. You can kill them at about 10 if you're careful. 15-20 to be safe, though.

Newbie question:

Does this mean a limed hide without a brain is worth nothing, because I never get an additional brain in the future to tan it? Because each new brain comes from an animal with another hide to tan. So existing (or found) limed hides without an accompanying brain to tan it is useless? Or is there something else I can do with an untanned limed hide? The wiki shows only (tanned) leather as possible outcomes.

Sell your excess dried hides to the white stalls while keeping your limed hide in the tub. Don't make more limed hides until you have made leather of the ones in the tub. Easy.
