use the dig command, dig 1 point of dirt then dump it back in the spot you dug. YES it will make the area and possibly the minimap ugly with dirt splots for awhile but it will regrow if you do not use paving.

other wise you will have to pave the ground with stones before building. frankly the grass is better then mass paving IMO but to each their own.

Do you, or anyone else, know if this is restricted to forests only or does it apply to grassland too? I've been able to confirm that houses can't be built on (autumnal) forest, but I don't have access to flat grassland.

it seems to be all "wild" ground.

grassland/confed/autum any non-dirt/paved ground prevents houses. which is weird when i used to live in a confed forest you had to change the ground to dirt by digging or paved it to build even a pilgram house.

same is true for most grasslands. though most of the time people dont notice as they have dirt do to landscaping prior to house building, or they paved for that nice stone look

Yeah that's exactly what I have done (flatten before building) and why I'm surprise to find this out. Thanks for letting me know. :)

I wonder why... is it because it put the dirt back? Meanwhile some little holes I dug up for clay elsewhere are evident on the minimap...

The minimap is showing an old tile from with that map-chunk first loaded. Port to boston, then come back and I think you'll see the change.

Just wanted to confirm that you Sir are correct. I checked back today and now there is a noticeable white patch in the forest where I did my digging :(
