About Cutting Down Trees

Do they grow back at their stumps, randomly sprout, or what?

You have to plant new trees.

You need forestry skill. It was added recently. Check announcements. It's in one of dev posts.

Look up "Forestry" on the wiki and work your way back.

Once you have forestry, you take cuttings from a tree, and plant them in a garden pot. After a few days, they either begin die, or thrive. Once they're thriving in a garden pot, you transplant them into dirt. A week later, they grow into a proper tree.

Note: It seems like forestry requires a lot of leveling to unlock, and it's much easier to just harvest from one of the many forests in the game so, unless you're absolutely sure you need it, I'd focus on other skills and/or consider relocating instead.

Still would be good to get as the devs have stated that there will be more efficient means of growing trees in the future. While planting won't solve all your wood needs, it'll help alleviate some of the alt trading necessary to move wood from more heavily wooded areas or hours of dragging trees from A to B.

I don't think they have said more efficient, but have mentioned that with tree seeds we will be able to improve the purity of the tree products.

How close can I plant a tree to another tree or structure? Is there a limit?

I have not found a limit yet, nor a limit to the growth of the tree (contrary to haven). I planted a couple of trees as close to my bread ovens as I could, and they're growing through the bread oven's roof as we speak :)
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

Hmm ok. So 1 tile away makes them grow through stuff?
I think I'll keep them away from any buildings and things just in case. I want some of them to be "decoration".
