Fruit trees and rare variants

Postby JeffGV » Sun Dec 09, 2012 11:45 pm

Ok, as now we lack fruit trees like apple trees and such, but i think that soon or later they will implemented (maybe).
Said so, when i was raising saplings i accidentally got a beaming sunflower, and that made me think: what if there was a chance to get a rare version of a plant?
For example, we may get a golden apple tree. Said tree could give a finite amount of golden apples (and just those, it bears no fruits after that) that can be used in place of apples for the relative recipes (thus getting alternate, and better, versions of those foods).
You can then get a cutting from the rare version. You don't necessarily get a rare version from that, but it has got better chances than a normal tree of that type.

I think an idea like this would be coherent with the game.
As the humours resemble the medical beliefs of the time, agriculture products before industrialization were diverse, carrots weren't all orange and for i.e. a potato production would have variants such as this image: http://goo.gl/wwgHC

Of course, implementation wouldnt have to be that accurate... but at least some red corn poping out, for instance.
there's a whole culture behind the chicha morada in Peru for it.

so many possibilities, each fruit could lead to new recipes too... apple pies, etc...

Money doesn't grow on trees, unless it's the uber rare silver tree

Fruit trees and orchards? I approve!

Just Apples alone could be very interesting with their propensity to give you mostly useless Crab Apples without careful breeding and selection. In this time period, apples were primarily used for Cider, as breeding sweet tasty edible apples was still in its early stages.

I think this is a GREAT idea tho I would take it one further. I think the Maples should be able to be tapped once every so often to give that nice goey sweet sap to make syrup. You could refine it in the press to make sugar and other resulting products you might get from pressing the liquid out of the sweet sap. :)
As for the rare tree that is still used for cooking that you can get a cutting off of but only a chance for it to be the rare one. This would be kool as long as the reward for reaching botanist level in skills has a reward of returing MORE chances to get rares and higher quality returns from the work put in.
