As far as I have seen:
- paving does not directly influence mold. Timber piles not built on paving can still give 100% dry boards.
- 5 open tiles in between piles is required to be able to get 100% dry boards.
- it does look like time of harvest is of importance. As in, if you wait too long, there will be mold. Not 100% sure here, it could have been caused by wildlife.
- grassland can spawn on plowed terrain that is not directly adjecent to any biome, and spread from there.
- if you want 100% reliable piles, you will need a walled off, paved area. Why? Because wildlife spawns will not occur on pavement (at least I think they won't). You can wall of your piles and everything, but without paving, there will always be a chance of animal spawns getting too close to your piles, causing molds. Animals can spawn inside fences, and on claims.
- especially fear the wildlife spawns after some of your flattened land turns into grassland. In Salem, crickets are like termites.
I don't have my piles on walled off pavement. Too much of a waste of space. I take some animal damage for what it is. On average, I get about 85% dry boards.
