Getting out of the forum and into the game.

Played for about a solid 12 hours last week,

Just having a hard time committing to one spot with upkeep and all.

And a question, Is a first settlement better by a lime node or a forest?

Only around 20 sec walk difference, forest is also by water. (Personal opinion type question here, what would you do((be sides man up and play on plymouth)))

it's mostly up to personal preference, I guess, but I'd say the first settlement is better around a mine entrance.
Anyways:

lime node or forest?

I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

I am having the same commitment issues as you :) I found a massive lime quarry within walking distance from an existing mine, but it's also next to a town that was raised to the salted earth not long ago. I've got maps with good locations marked all over them. I think I'm just going to force myself to pick one and commit. I mean the worst that could happen is loosing a few hundred silver, right?

Lime is the one I'd go for if I had to choose, it'll make smelting easier and you can bulk out farmed goods with it to expand rapidly. Preferably you'll build your actual place around a mineshaft itself so you can make iron more efficiently, but if not, a nearby mine works too.

Forests are GREAT for foraging and hunting early on but lose their effectiveness quickly once your farming starts taking off and you start crafting better food/inspirationals.
Edit: Forests also raise your chance of being found, since they are such good places to forage early on they get more visitors than other terrain types

Ultimately for me, my goal is to spend most of my game planting trees in all this nasty grassland, Idk if im to close to the city but it seems like all I see Is grassland
Would I need to be close to a mine for this goal? (Hint-I want more of the world to be trees)

Planting trees is a long and arduous process. Without high stocks and cultivars (I'm talking 200+) you will fail a majority of the trees you plant. If you are in a grassland then over time you will have to venture far and wide to get cuttings from fresh trees (they don't respawn) and with such a high failure rate even the forest you plant will not have enough cuttings available. Then you have to factor in all of the compost you will fuel with crops to keep your pots ready for replanting.

As for lime vs mine. As a hermit lime helps a lot, you can plenty up crops and take up less space. Eventually you'll want to make an alt with mining and invest in a good dowsing rod to set up a walled in pclaim mine. However mass producing iron with this method is ... ineffective. All depends on how hardcore of a hermit you will be, and if you plan to set up a town a mine is an absolute must.

If you are making your first settlement you might want it by the lime node but thats for mining mostly so if you want you can always make your main settlement by a forest and then make a small walled in area to mine from. these are my own opinions though :P so its more your own choice what ever you prefer :P
