Gah, found a place last night (hence my question about digging), logged out before setting up a leantoo. Logged in today and suprise! another man's leantoo (wasn't there before).

This world is so very big yet I've counted 1000's of leantoo's but I've yet to see a player in the wild :).

i'm pretty sure that leantos decay in a couple of weeks already, so with the recent opening of the beta most of those will probably be gone in a month :)
I have neither the crayons nor the time to explain it to you.

My tips can be found here (as of today): Settling down on a personal claim
Let me know what you think of it. Feel free to leave a comment. :)

Also, people set up leantos to safely travel back and forth between the server city. It doesn't mean they will settle on that particular spot.

Don't trust them. Players can come out at any time :).
When I find 4 leantoo's together i'm not even going to stand around and take the risk.

All in all, thank you, now i know how long it takes for them to go away.

Thank you for the read, learned a few things.

Comments: What I was missing is that next to the different biomes there is also different terrain types. plains, Hills, rough land, mountainous and high mountains. Edit: You forgot to add Swampland as well.

But looking at that screen capture of your old place in the woods, makes me want to go look for woodlands again :).

Also there's a little-known 3rd type of forest:the "Mixed" forest. Whereas the Coniferous has only spruce trees, and appears on the minimap as brown background with green spots, the Mixed Forest has many kinds of trees (including Maple) and appears as Greenish background with Brown spots. Overall, the minimap hue of a Mixed Forest is slightly redder than a Coniferous.

Mixed and Coniferous forests also have a very different set of forageables: Mixed Forests will spawn Milkweed in abundance, but are totally deficient in Chestnuts, Blewits, and Berries.

As for the original topic here about the annoyances of exposed dirt, I too find it really annoying! I have taken great effort to only level my land slowly, and in strips so as to keep pieces of grass as seeds to facilitate re-spreading "behind the lines". Also useful is to partially flatten an area and then wait for the grass to spread onto the flat land, and then flatten the remaining rough areas. Be careful when flattening those slopes, though, since you can accidentally destroy adjacent grass on flat land!

The terrain types are mentioned based on mini map tiles.
But yes, swamps are missing. I left it out on purpose just like I left out beaches. I didn't want to go too in depth on terrain as the guide is mainly for those starting out with their first camp. Also, I wasn't able to confirm some of the things so I rather leave out stuff than be completely wrong.

But thanks for reading.

interesting about the grass.. wish they would sell grass seed as id totally buy it...

also, my future claims will have little to no cement. I was walking around yesterday stareing at the mini map and then swung my camera around and was like Woah... i walked upon a 30 tile claim (vacated) but it was practically invisible on the mini map

Well, you can grow grass in a plant pot once you get the required skills. But I guess this is not what you were after.

I think this is a good thing. Fitting.
Someone should teach me how to play this game.

Finding a place away from players that is flat is the better place to start out.

Do hedge walls show up on the map? If they do, wooden walls/fences would be my bet.
Staying hidden is the better defense in the beginning I think.
