Snake Determination?

Postby waico » Mon Mar 11, 2013 3:19 am

Why do snakes follow you across all of North America? Am i missing somethign here? It seems kind of stupid for a snake to follow you for 35 miles? I recently caught the attention of a snake, started running. Coincidently had a full bag of good food. So i start popping food and trying to put terrain inbetween me and the snake... doesnt matter. Once he gets on me, no matter what, he follows.
This seems stupid, and doesnt make sense. Would a snake follow a predator, at sprint speed for 35 miles? They protect their area, and will give extremely small chase after prey, but wont chase for any sort of extended period of time/distance.

Is the game simply coded, so when a snake catches on to you, he just keeps going until either one of you gives up?

You have to put distance between you and the snake. You can turn on run to help you do this. You can also click on the circle next to the picture of the snake (upper right corner I think) to change it from 2 swords to a sword and a branch. This is your way of getting out of combat on your end. Then if enough distance is between you and the snake, he too will end combat.

I literally just went through a bag of food, on RUN, from a snake, sometimes with a whole screen of distance between us... he never gave up. I tried putting a bunch of jagged mountains inbetween us... didnt help. Its kinda ridiculous. Ruins the whole experience when Magic Snakes god mode and follow until your dead.

you do know that eating in combat doesn't do anything right?

They will lose agro if you get far enough away. they also wont cross water.

They dont follow you accross water, if you Wander or Run you will eventually create a distance long enough to disengage combat. You can tell that you are getting far enough once the portrait of the snake turns into the generic texture (the question mark). And really there is nothing really wrong with this other than that it is not "realistic".

EDIT: Oh oh I remember, I got a snake to aggro onto a rabbit instead of me too.

Yep, I hate this snakes in real life are not this agressive. Be prepared to lose all your loot until you are able to fight well. And then you need antidote which costs $250.

Are you sure you were actually running? I've never had to go more than a map screen to get rid of a snake. Don't weave back and forth when you're escaping, just go in a straight line and you'll out pace it pretty quick.

The water only really works if you can find some shallows you can cross or swimming. With some basic combat awareness, you can avoid being bit without burning up a bunch of phlegm running. It won't help you get far away, but if you know where some water is in the area, it'll help save you some energy and food working your way there.

Remember that this isn't your typical MMO (aka WoW clone). The rules are quite different here, so be prepared to relearn a lot of things you think you know.

In the past I have been able to use WANDER to gain enough distance on a snake and extend the olive branch of peace to him after putting some distance between us. However, recently (5 days ago) I was WANDERing away from an agro'd snake (low humored alt without rattler serum) for about 10 map tiles as I headed toward some shallow water. Without requesting peace, the snake continued his pursuit followed by a couple bunnies and a cricket. It all ended well for me, but I was surprised the snake pursued for so long. Fun times in Salem :)

On a side note, I observed an Argopelter kill a bear in 2 hits. I was eager to try to grab the bear pelt, but I was smart enough to stay far away from those vicious argopelters!
