24 hours. That's how long it takes. You can also be released by the claim holder or murdered during that time.

There's quite a few of these "odd" mechanics in Salem. I'd really suggest you utilize the wiki or Help! forum before attempting anything you're not familiar with.

Thread moved to Help! as this isn't a bug.

How do you find yourself "apparently" tresspassing, by the by? You need a specific toggle. It's the kind of thing that when you do it, you know you're doing it.

Edit: fixed.

I don't see how this isn't a bug, it let me walk onto land that I'm not supposed to be on, then I get perma killed? Lame

It's not a bug. There are four ways to walk on someone else's claim.

1. They give you permissions via there claimstone and matching colors in buddy list.
2. You are in a party with them which gives you temporary permission.
3. The claim has run out of upkeep and is dead.
4. You turned on criminal acts and trespassed (do not need trespassing skill to trespass) and you will lose humors until you leave or ko.

Think of a claim as a fence you don't have to climb. Would you climb someone's fence to walk through their yard? Probably not as having a fence is enough of a sign saying "don't trespass, you may be prosecuted." (this is by US laws, which vary by state/county/city)

In the future, you should really read about what something does or doesn't do before testing it. This isn't the only "weird" mechanic you're going to run across.
