Novice question re: Plymouth geopolitics

I mosty keep to myself in the New World, but in a few recent trade dealings I have heard mention of The Tribe, and not in a positive light. Not knowing anything about The Tribe, I have been reading with interest the forums lately. I remain confused. Is The Tribe composed of troublemakers? People not affiliated with them seem to call themselves rebels or be advocates of a "free Salem". Or have they been unfairly maligned? I have to say, the last fellow I traded with, who seemed to be a very nice and sensible fellow, cautioned me that we had to trade outside the center of Boston because if any of The Tribe saw him dealing with me, he'd be whacked.

If anyone can offer me an unbiased explanation I would be grateful. As I said, I have mostly kept to myself but in the future plan to dip my toe ever deeper into the community.

The tribe makes members of Salem pay a "treaty" that is a monthly fee in silver or items every month based on the size of the claim of land you have. On top of this, you must show them your location. If you miss your payment, they will kill you and destroy your base. If you do not pay, they will kill you and destroy your base. They often try to defame trusted traders by using alt accounts and saying that they were scammed by the trader. The treaty is a "blood-tax" in many ways. Rebels are people who do not pay the treaty and support others who do the same. The tribe is very much a government in power on Plymouth atm and the rebellion is full of people against that. The tribe memorizes traders and will attack people they find trading with them in an attempt to hurt their business.

Here is the unbiased version on the politics on Plymouth:
Im not sure how long the tribe has been around as an organization, but they seem to consist of individuals with alot of spare time on their hands. (Some members seem capapble of staring at the screen 15 hours straight.) They havent always been the dominant faction. They really stepped out from the end of desember 2012 and after the fall of Gallows Hill have been the dominant faction. After the fall of GH taxes were implemented. They have clear rules on what it takes to avoid the tribes sanctions, the main one being that you pay your taxes. The downfall of the tribe is most likely to come from within their ranks. They are also known for alot of propaganda on the forums.

Gallow Hills seem to consist of friends playing the game Haven and Hearth that is the predecessor to this game. (Wether they are friends now remains unclear judging from talk in the forums.) They are among some people considered elitist and are known to grief people to a certain degree. They are at the core of the rebellion which at the moment seems pretty unorganized. They have a few forum warriors that post alot. Many mods are known to be member of this group of people.

If you want to know more about the treaty, you can read the MM Tribe Treaty thread in this forum, though it is a very long thread and has evolved a bit over time. You can also contact ikpeip on the forums to learn more about what benefits the treaty gives and what costs. No one has mentioned here that the treaty comes with complementary rangering service if someone not of the tribe should disturb you, and that the tribe does a lot of trading with treaty payers. Safe and honest trading.

Basically from a guy that doesn't play on the server and just reads the forums and reactions....

you have one ORGANIZED power on Plymouth and that is the Tribe. They are lead by the "Chief" (see scalp thread). They "rule" the server by using extortion via the Treaty (you pay a % of tribute to them based on your claim size) what you get with this is a promise that they wont raid/kill you, and will hunt anyone down that they can that attacks you (as long as they aren't too big). For this you must.....

1.) pay your tribute monthly
2.) not trade with anyone considered an enemy of the tribe (basically anyone that isn't a treaty member of member of the tribe)
3.) used to be you couldn't undercut their prices in trade but not sure if that is still an article
4.) do not aid in any way an enemy of them (basically anyone not a tribe member or a treaty member)
5.) give them your location and be kin of them (so if you fail to pay or violate any of the above they can find you)

They are known for killing new players and fighting the "resistance"

Then there is the UNORGANIZED groups that all fall under the label "resistance" basically this is anyone that doesn't pay the treaty and/or actively fights the tribe. This is a huge label encompassing everything from people that just want to be left alone to those that are actively resisting the Tribe. There is no central leadership because they are a large group of small factions that all kinda do their own thing. So some of them are just raiders that don't pay treaty and hit everyone, people that only fight the Tribe, people that only hide in a hermitage and craft. So its kinda idiotic to blame the whole resistance for the act of one player.

Currently this fight has heated up on the past week or so it was mostly done except for a few players that were actively fighting (mushibag, etc). Now it has evolved into both an active war on the server and a huge propaganda push on the forums.
