A dog more like THIS one:

I realize it is big as a horse almost, but I am short and well, this is a Caucasian Shepherd Dog .
They are used to scare off bear in Mountain regions. Here is a more modern day version with his best friend:

Who in their right mind would try to tame a wolf from scratch when they could buy a dog in town? (Ok I know some people crossbred wolves and dogs recently to try to get a "tame" wolf, but it with mixed results.)

Apparently settlers and Indians alike tamed wild dogs. As it is better to have them working FOR you rather than eating your stock. Some folks instead of murdering the dogs saw them as a useful asset once tamed. So yea, I'd much rather tame my own pet in Salem. Then I know that no other man has fowl'd it with bad habits.

Where did the wild dogs come from?

Why...they came from the Gods of Salem :)

Also the one in my image is not a wolf. It is a Caucasian Shepherd Dog. It is much larger and scarier than a wolf, used on mountain farms and homes to keep bears away and is also prized as a "wolf killer".

I'd propose a Manx for cats which could be found near the warf in Salem as they were brought over on ships to keep the rodent population down on the boats. They are some of the BEST mousers on the planet. and among some of the first domesticated cats from overseas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manx_(cat)
