Right now, if you have anything setup prior to leveling the ground it is impossible without destroying the said object (claim stone, house, walls, etc)....

Allow players to level the terrain everywhere they want without the stupid restrictions....and this includes allowing players to actually remove really annoying odd hills/etc...right now its impossible to get these really flattened out properly as there are always peaks that you cannot climb due to the smallness or some other weird problem so you have to live with an unusable area of your plot because you have no option to whittle down that odd hill, whereas it should be a matter of just working the outer ring and dropping the center down or something similar - or allow toon to actually stand on peak and remove it bit by bit.

But srsly just level the ground before you build on it, if you think it is important to have level ground. And yea the cliffs are annoying, they can be removed by throwing a lot of dirt around them and then digging em away.

Yes, there is (pretty stupid) possibility to remove cliffs like you explained, but ability to dig on cliff is needed anyway.

I don't think its a problem myself, although it would be nice to have a tool for faster leveling in general.

faster leveling would always be nice, but even with the current system you can -eventually- flatten any cliff. You just need to raise the surrounding tiles to the same height first.
Don't do it if you can avoid it :)

Ya I expanded farther than I originally intended, ended up digging away some pretty crazy concentration of cliffs. If you use control click you can sometimes dig the cliff point from an adjacent one.

I levelled one of those really annoying bits, just for giggles. If it were made possible to dig cliffs I think there should be a risk of the cliff collapsing and causing damage, I don't know if this is completely feasible, it could just be as simple as you ending up at the bottom of the cliff and hurt.

As an aside what are people thoughts on man-made cliffs, perhaps if it required 2 boards per tile, it would obviously mostly be a graphical thing but I kind of like the idea of building terraces for my farm.

I wouldn't count the current terrain mechanics as "finished" yet. I don't want to say anything more than what has already been put out publicly by the devs as I don't know if anything will change before release (or if they can actually get any new mechanics to work bug-free).

I'm not sure why there's a complete restriction on digging at all near established objects, though. Some alteration is fine, especially if you're going from a positive slope away from the object to a flat slope. I could see preventing allowing a negative slope, though, as for some buildings (houses, etc.) it could create an instability in the foundation. (Sorry for tossing in the "real" engineering there.) Given that there is only so much of a slope we can dig, anyway, I'd think we could at least make the land flatter whether that means digging down or building up.

as far as I see, for "solid" constructions (stake claim, houses, etc.) you cannot adjust the tiles on which they are directly standing (none of their four corners). you can adjust other corners of adjacent tiles though. For some lighter stuff (springing to mind, piles of wood), you can adjust the tile however you please, provided you can access its corners/center.

Yeah, there's some items you can dig around and others you can't. Last time I was seriously setting up a base (before last wipe), you could pretty easily divide it into "buildings requiring a foundation" and "tools/constructions that don't". The claim stone and fences couldn't be adjusted once set (along with ovens, smelters, etc.) but others like fireplaces and fields could be. I'd think the claim stone would be in the latter, but it was in the former. I'm not sure if there's any other exceptions, and no idea if any of it has been changed.
