Some impressions

Postby JimmyJames » Sat Mar 02, 2013 6:00 pm

I gave Salem a go earlier and thought I'd post a few first impressions:

-The gather/study/replenish bile mechanic is kind of boring. I read that it's actually fairly difficult to die permanently, which is good because having to grind out those starting skills over and over would be torture.
-I like the overall feel of the game, setting, graphics, etc.
-It took a while to figure out what to do. I ended up tabbing out and finding one of the guides on the forums.
-I haven't seen a single player since I talked to the wilderness guy in town.

Basically it feels like an Isometric version of Wurm Online, good and bad included. I normally prefer sandbox type games but I am left thinking "why bother?" in this case.

The study mechanic is ALOT better then the original hnh one. It gets alot better when you have a study plan.

Dying is only from other players atm, soon animals will also do this.

You need to do alot of research to play this game, I feel it makes the experience alot more rewarding

Server pops are low and the world is fairly large. Get into a large town and make friends. This game is nothing until you have a fun group of people to grow with.

I suppose I was hoping for a more dangerous setting with less of a grind. Big thanks to Sevenless for that guide he put up. I'll see if I can find a group to play with but it's a bit troubling that server pops are so low on an open beta/F2P game.

This game isn't for everyone.

Unless you get involved there isn't much to do after you have it all. Which will change in time.

The game surely isn't for everyone. As what was alluded to, the game mechanics and game-play itself requires a tremendous commitment to accomplish advancement, and survivorship. In addition to the other comment, the game has had a couple if years if marketing and advertising. . .exposure to sandbox survivalist, crafting, competitive, and pvp enthusiast mmo gamers isn't the root cause of abysmally low population.
