Then no matter how aggressive you are, your farmer is completely invulnerable, not only practically like he is now.
...then again, since everyone's already doing it, it's not that big of a stretch.
Actually, how about a Jekyll and Hyde thing? Each character has two sides, each with its own humour levels. Jekyll cannot fight other pilgrims or commit crimes at all, but can be knocked out, turning into Hyde, but not losing anything - yet. Hyde, in turn, can commit crimes, destroy objects, track criminals, and fight other pilgrims. When he is knocked out, all his humours go down to 5.
If the two sides' humours are equal, they're raised simultaneously. But if Hyde's are lower, only his are, so you have to get him back to where you left off before raising Jekyll's further.
A character can transform voluntarily once he learns the rights of Englishmen, but it takes a while, and cannot transform more often than 6 hours. If a transformation was forced, he can only go back to being Jekyll after 24 hours, or when the offender has himself been killed. Well, knocked out.
There, safe progress for peaceful characters, high risks for fighters, and no need to game the game by keeping two separate characters and alt vaults. Sounds a bit silly, but you guys are clever. You can refine it.
