The consequence for newbies is to have to make another char with almost no loss in profs or gluts? (And the grass.)

Those guys were smelting iron! They have iron mine, so they needed few days to get those skills up... and they are still unaware of danger that sucks.

You did not mention the mine or the skills they had aquired in your former post. I guess its a part of the charm of the game being killed and learn from it. I have played since november, and I havent made any iron yet. I just gather grass to make hay to make silver to buy the tools I need.

Let's not bring the lack of a tutorial into this. Yeah, it's a problem, but the game's still a beta, and the core problem is in the mechanics.

And it's not the new players (who really, really don't lose much anyway since dying) or the old ones (who are probably well enough established to shrug that death off and grind another character to where they were fairly quickly) I'm worried about. It's the middle of that curve.

Could have a non-permadeath server. Still have KOs (muggings, defense, raiding, etc).

or

Could just make it to where a person cannot be killed unless someone has their scent/evidence. That way the innocent can only be ko'd, but one could still kill criminals.

you could allow pve servers to exist for say 6 months than allow pvp and server transfer to take care of all the nice things.

Not the right approach. Since there is no competition, limiting the entire server's lifespan will only anger people. Other MMOG's manage, don't they?

Maybe if it's absolutely necessary, some form of permadeath can be kept. Aggressive animals, for instance. Maybe introduce an actual life cycle to characters, so they do age and eventually die. Nothing sufficiently elegant comes to mind right now, but it's a direction to think in.

Great!!!

You should be able to choose during character creation is it PvP of PvE char...
PvP chars would be normal characters like it is now, but PvE char can not be killed by other players, but he will die over some time (more KO's he get his life may be shorter) :)

Nah, mixing the two is a very bad idea. Just make a few aging characters and go kill people randomly, you'll take much longer to stop than a default character.

If the difference is to be introduced, it has to be on different servers.
