I got mine day before yesterday and it may help you plan ahead to know this, if you have not already read it in wiki. Don't get too excited when you get that 150s and buy your writ and can finally protect your ****... 'cause you can't. Your initial claim lands you a 3x3 area and it costs 1s per square to increase.
Sorry if I burst your bubble... but like I said, it might help you plan better knowing that in advance.
5x5 if I'm not completely off. But you are right on that it's a bad idea to get the writ of homesteading before you have found a piece of land that suits you. It is much better to take your time exploring and build up the character than shoot for settling immediately. It's a good idea to have a "banker" (alternative account) that will hold any silver you make so that you can buy more land right away.
