Native American Crops

Postby Mereni » Sat Jan 12, 2013 7:35 am

I notice that sugar can only be obtained by buying from the stalls. Since it was farmed extensively in the Carribean and still is, will we ever have it as a growable crop in Salem?

I also would like to suggest potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and peanuts as crops that have quite a few uses and are native American.

Walnuts, pecans, and vanilla would be good foragables, yes? And maybe maple syrup as another something we can get from maple trees?

And... bison?

There is a lot of stuff that is yet to be added into the game, but since we can't make them in game yet, they're just adding them to the stalls so they are still accessible for now, I'm sure they still have a lot more stuff to add, some of them being sugar making, glass making and bacon (Pigs!). I'm pretty sure *most* of the items in the stands will be craftable at one point.

Ewww, High Fructose Corn Syrup wasn't invented till the 1950s.

Yeah, sugar cane is mostly a southern crop and I don't think it grows in northern climates, but it could grow in Salem!

I also think there should be limits to what Biome can grow which crops. That would reduce the ability to make everything in the same place.

Maybe they could add some Caribbean colonies where some crops can be grown that cannot be grown up north, of course some crops available in the north would not be available there. And then they could add an inter server trade system to go with the cross server travel.

Beet sugar? Sorghum? Both common sources of sugar prior to corn syrup. Sugar beets were first used in the 16th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beet_sugar#History). Both grow very well in temperate climates.

In general the North american natives had very few agricultural products compared to the fertile crescent. Corn being the only feasible product that came from Mexico. It was also a plant that needed alot of cultivation to become what it was(is). There is not much point in introducing alot of plants from central and southern america if it cant grow in temperate climates. Potatoes came to North America with the settlers from Europe since the natives didnt communicate much with the people of Peru.
