For me it is about harvest time. In an experiment there must only be one variable. My only variable is harvest time. Everything else is constant. So, I'm just sharing my experience that mine seem to be based on harvest time and every pile I harvest proves true to that. Maybe many things influence it. Maybe nothing does and it's all luck. I don't know, but this is what my experience has been. Whether other people have different results or not doesn't matter. ALL observations are valid if they can be repeated and proven. And yes, 5 open spaces.

how big is the timber pile itself when talking about spaces?
1x1, 2x2 or 3x3

since a construction site is 1x1 and That could cause confusion When testing.

Good catch.

Timber Piles are 2x2, however, if you don't remove them from the grid when placing, they'll be centered on one tile, making them overlap all the tiles around them. For my piles, I build them on the grid, and basically treat them like a 3x3 for spacing. (so I guess technically I have at least 5.5 tiles of open space)

Seems one has to buy an awful lot of land (everything is relative) just to have 1 timber pile with decent turn out. :|

Yeah. Pretty stupid mechanics if you ask me, should be done some other way.

Actually, I think mechanic is pretty cool, but it shouldn't require THAT much free space.

Why I like it? Just like farming, one of the primary resources is space. You can build more fields / piles at the cost of space. The more you have the harder it is to properly defend it. Basically, as you advance you should have to expand your place and make it bigger. And not just stack everything in your mine with 1 tile fields

I placed my camp in a not so prosperous area (which I'm taking as learning experience) and will allocate a 14x19 area for a timber pile or two. It's less than the recommended empty 5 square radius, but what the hell. *shrugs* I'll rebuild elsewhere if my property ever gets raided/destroyed.

Try experimenting with different terrain too.

Also, you can't build the timber piles on certain forest terrain without removing all the leaves by digging or paving the area first.

Yes, this also applies to building a lot of objects on forest terrain.
