on reflection I was wearing beer (or in my case - vodka) goggles.

Agreed, but personally I'm far more likely to lean over and casually start making out with someone who is ugly when I'm drunk rather than when I'm sober. Beer (vodka, definitely vodka) goggles are more like beer uninhibitors to me.
*on second though, uninhibitors is a bad word and could mean that I was previously inhibited from some kind of desire to make out with ugly people. Perhaps it's more like Beer Bad Wing Mens. Or Beer Don't Worry Man, It's All About Getting Back In The Games.
I could use a drink now. :D

Well it's undeniable that alcohol and good judgement don't go hand in hand. Yet I was under the impression that people with "beer goggles" actually perceived a person they'd soberly consider ugly to look better. Not that they think "oh well, whatever" but actually convince themselves that they are happy with their catch.
On the other hand I could have misunderstood the whole thing, but then it should be beer judgement and not goggles
