I would much rather spend my time living in a great looking place that can easily be sacked than spend it living in a heavily fortified ugly piece of ****. I still believe that the best defenses are anonymity and finding a good location. For the new players, a good location is NOT smack in the middle of a well traveled grassland. Go hide somewhere that's a pain in the ass to get to. The more of a nuisance it is to raid your place, the less likely it is that someone will bother unless you really piss them off. You don't need cheesy tactics or tons of wall layers to achieve that, just some thought and time invested in finding a good location.

You must be joking. HnH only died because of the server lag. If it was working fine atm numbers would still be around 1000 at most times in hnh. Hnh with its terrible lag has almost the same amount of people on Plymouth. If it wasn't for the lag Salem would be dead.

This is true and I don't dispute the fact that current defenses aren't where they need to be in order to support the type of faction rivalry that we saw in HnH. I was solely speaking as a hermit in regards to why I choose not to fortify my place with more than 3-4 walls. With the current state of defenses you can't have it look nice and be really effective. You should know by now after reading enough of my posts that I'm all about the aesthetics and having things look nice.Hopefully things will change and we'll have some good defense options that will allow more faction rivalry, that was one of my favorite parts of HnH. There's no one good to ally my hermit camp with right now.

If someone feels like griefing you, not much you can do other than move.

Which results in A: Period of safety for a very brief amount of time, or B: new raiders right away.
