It's really hard to dictate what firewall or AV program a person should use. Many factors go into the decision and the same decision for one person isn't necessarily good for another. There's a lot of variation in quality and capabilities of each program, from ease of use to configuration as well as the quality of the shields.
The truth is, if a person is savvy enough and has the money, they don't need a firewall or active AV on a computer, but not everyone is capable of running that kind of set up or can afford it. What else are we supposed to do, otherwise? Get rid of software X and get Y because it can do Java safely? Maybe we should all become power users and know how to manipulate even the most arcane piece of software? Unless we can all reach that lofty goal or we get better security software, there comes a point when a person will have to be told "disable your firewall/AV." Hopefully the person is wise enough to not do anything else until it gets turned back on.
