So the fact remains that without resorting to cheesy "tactics", defenses will only deter small time criminals and slow down mediocre criminals. Terminator characters will only laugh at your feeble attempts. Glad we could clear that up.

IMO, defenses aren't broken, it's the terminator characters that are broken, especially with our current set of defense options.

Braziers are fine. Walls are not. Having 5-10+ walls is not cool or exciting because in the end someone will get in even the more determined small time criminals. As for the "terminator" characters as you noobs keep calling them can be killed just as easy. End game pvp comes down to summon killing back and forth. High humors are not the problem at all.

What is stopping people from just simply summon killing the chief while he's asleep?

Rebuilding industry and characters. There are 2 "shadow" factions on plymouth that i'm not sure of their humors. Everyone else on plymouth are casuals who rather roll over and pay his treaty. Everyone seems to magically forgotten bait would summon chief daily/weekly until he got bored of it. They also seem to forget that he was driven into hidding from CoD.

If you want an honest answer:

a) Walls just arnt effective, the time taken to put them up versus their benefits is a poor trade-off.
b) They don't look very nice. It might surprise people who play the game purely to grief, but building an aesthetically pleasing village is important to some people. Up to three walls gives a place a nice border but more than that starts to look silly.
c) Having to click 10 gates to go anywhere is a pain.
d) Building additional walls gives lower and lower marginal benefit, even worse with braziers. If someone is prepared to put the time in/has the capability to take down your defenses then generally you want to increase them by at least an order of magnitude. That means going from 3/4 walls to 30/40 walls which is completely impractical.
e) Investing serious time in the buggy/exploity types of defense could be a complete waste of time as those bugs could be fixed and you are left with no defense. Not to mention most look awful.
f) Building more than a few walls isn't much fun.

As for why do people build townhouses? Well they look nice, there isn't any game reason afaik not to just build a pilgrims hovel for the stove as i can't think of any other benefit of having an expensive house. That said a townhouse really isn't hard to build at all.

35 dry boards
15 planed boards
25 nails
10 bricks
6 glass panels

Compared to the following for a plank fence for a 20x20 wall (which is still completely **** against top end characters) 1x starter 4x corner 1x gate( gonna be more if you want extra gates):

193 dry boards
105 planed boards
6 oiled boards
17 nails
4 leather
