A Bit of History

Postby painhertz » Wed Dec 26, 2012 2:34 am

So... a lot of people probably don't realize that Louisiana was one of the first settled parts of North America (By Europeans, Native Americans lived here for 10's of thousands of years).... Louisiana was first explored 100 years before Salem existed so don;t be surprised at what follows. :)

About 7 years or so ago I got my older brother into Metal Detecting as a hobby, I had been into it for several years and he took interest, bought his own machine and away he went. For several years he only found coins from the 20-21rst Centuries whereas a lot of my own, owing to a ***** of historical research were from the early 20th and 19th Century. The part of Louisiana I live in really wasn't settled until the end of the 1800's so it's not odd the not find much older. He on the other hand lives near Baton Rouge where settlements go back to the 1600's and long story short, he and a buddy got permission to hunt some sugar caine fields that used to have a Colonial Tavern on them and Colonial settlements and the stuff they find there is pretty amazing. His buddy (Nickname Buckleboy) edited together a couple of videos of some of their finds so I figured I'd share them with you, just remember that the last people to touch these coins and stuff were the Louisiana versions of the characters you play in this game.... Without further ado....

"The settlement of Natchitoches (along the Red River in present-day northwest Louisiana) was established in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, making it the oldest permanent settlement in the territory that then composed the Louisiana colony"
-From Wikipedia

I live about half an hour south of Nachitoches and my wife and I are going there on new Year's Eve to watch the fireworks and celebrate our 5th Anniversary. :P

Kinda cool
I've always liked the idea of using a metal detector but I always figured the amount of things you find in relation to the time you spend looking like a total retard don't really level out in most parts of the world. :P

That second Reale my brother found, the one that's almost mint condition? It's worth $2000.00 ish That was their...18th? for the year. Granted he wouldn't sell them if he was starving. lol

metal detecting is an interesting hobby, done it a few times myself and have a decent detector but have not been out doing it in a long time since i moved, i grew up and live in the middle of where a lot of the main civil war battles were fought and found all kinds of ****, mostly buttons, bullets and shrapnel. sometimes you find more stuff in the trees than you do the ground because everyone metal detects on the ground completely ignoring the big old tree that has caught more than a few stray bullets or shell fragments. know one guy though that did it a lot back in the 70s before the battlefields were made "civilized" for the tourists and he has everything from revolvers and rifles to cannonballs that still have part of the cardboard fuses, unfired grapeshot still in tact fused together etc.

then there was the local guy who "found" a cannon in the river and shot cement filled beer cans out of it every fourth of july.
