A game trail or animal trail. Animals like deers and beers spawn more frequently near it.

Thanks, I keep seeing that I should settle close to lime deposits. Is that the darker stone areas, or the lighter stone areas? Sorry the guides are very vague and I never played Haven and Hearth. I also cannot seem to find any forests hardly and mostly run across grasslands. Are forests just very hard to find and any area larger than a small spot of them rare(I have been running around for about 3 hours now over the last two days)? I realize grasslands are the light green spans, but what are the light brown spans are those also grasslands?

Thanks again, hopefully that's all the questions I have for now :).

You don't have to. There are ways of getting around the need to settle on lime. They are the like colored spots. No forest are not rare

Lime:

All biomes are kinda big in salem. Some are 3h x 30mins in size others are bigger/smaller. Just pick one direction and move. :P

Alright thanks I keep heading north, hopefully I can find a good spot soon. I did find an awesome spot it seemed, however of course I kept looking around and someone else had a good sized claim of farm and building with brick walls. Now that I figured out crafting and inspirational's my different humors are going up fast :). For the longest time I was just wondering around looking for chestnuts and smooth stone to study without realizing I could do it with inspirational's lol. The game is slowly growing on me, but I can see how the learning curve could deter some new people quite easily(along with those with no patience in finding a spot to settle). I have noticed a bug where a lot of stuff I come across I cannot pick(due to terrain heights) though and that gets quite annoying(I have found a lot of blackberries on ramps which I cannot get).

Yeah exploring is one of the best ways to gain skills until you find a spot you like.

Bug been known for a long time. Really sucks lol. If you want the item bad enough you can dig it out but its really not worth it.

Alright I just found an incredible spot, however someone else has a claim nearby with a farm going. It's really hard to pass this up, is it a good idea to go to the opposite side of this forest/water/trail/quarry and claim some land to start out? After 6 hours of travelling it's starting to get a bit stale, and this is the best area I have found. At this point every spot I have found has been taken by some random player and it's starting to get old.

Could always start setting up camp there and try to have a chat with the neighbour, might turn out to be friendly. Me and my friends have come across several friendly neighbours in our travels, some have even helped us along with seeds and other items.
